Atelier Virtus Mentis

Very few people see a psychologist at the first sign that something is wrong. Far more often a year passes, or two, or five.

Usually nothing dramatic happens in that time. There is simply a wait for the moment when it becomes “serious enough”.

A threshold we set ourselves

Most of us carry some line in our heads, beyond which asking for help would be justified. It is usually set very high: losing a job, a relationship ending, the morning you genuinely cannot get up.

Until that line is crossed, everything else files under “a hard patch”. And a hard patch does pass, after all.

Sometimes it genuinely does. Sometimes it lasts three years.

What we do instead of talking

Putting the decision off rarely means doing nothing. Usually we do a great deal in that time — just not the thing that helps:

  • —More work, because a busy head is easier than a quiet one.
  • —Training to exhaustion, long after it stopped being enjoyable.
  • —An evening drink as the only way to switch off.
  • —The phone until midnight, to push back the moment of falling asleep.
  • —Silence — because explaining it to someone feels harder than living with it.

Each of these works in the short term. That is both their appeal and their cost.

What the delay is really about

It is rarely about time. Far more often it is the worry that a conversation will name something — and named things are harder to ignore. Or the belief that if a problem has no single clear cause, there is nothing to discuss.

You don’t need to know where to start. That’s the work of a first session, not a condition of entry.

What a first conversation looks like

A first session is not a diagnosis, and not a commitment to years of work. It is a conversation about what is happening, since when, and what you have already tried.

You can come without a prepared list. You can say you don’t know how to describe it. That is a normal starting point, not a lack of preparation.

You set the pace. Nothing obliges you to talk about everything at once.

When it is no longer worth waiting

If you keep returning to the thought that “something needs to be done about this”, and each time postpone it to a calmer moment — that usually means the calmer moment will not arrive on its own.

Talking to someone earlier is not a sign that you failed to cope. It is a decision not to leave important things to chance.
